Diocese of Covington Cursillo Movement

FROM THE LAY DIRECTOR ……

DIOCESE OF COVINGTON CURSILLO MOVEMENT

From the Lay Director - Carolyn Bosch

 2-2-09

Dear Cursillo Community:

Thank you to our dance committee, led by Vic and Barb Boelscher. The first DeColores Dance was so much fun, 150 people attended, the food, the company, the music, the camaraderie were wonderful. Bishop Foys joined us and told us he is so glad we are alive and well in the Diocese. Thank you Bishop Foys for your kind words. If you missed it this year, you will want to be sure to join us next year.

Thank you for your generosity in our annual pledge drive, so far we have collected $5,500 for our movement! This is absolutely wonderful, thank you so much.

The first Ultreya at St. Bernard was held on January 21st. It was a booming success. There were many people in attendance. Thank you one and all for making this happen and for your participation.

We need your help: to serve meals for the weekends, to do palanca, to pray in the chapel, to pray at home, to join us for the closings. If you would like to help serve meals, please contact Dan Heck on the web or at 859-802-8697 and he will direct you.  We are all very excited about the up and coming weekends. Talk to Jesus, ask Him who He wants you to talk to, and then talk with them about making a weekend and moving into their 4th day experience. Get them ready.

We have talked about the changes for our upcoming weekends. Please be sure you are aware of these, they are very important. There will be no Mass for any closings; there will be the witnesses from our new baby chicks, a prayer service and a reception. All of this will take place at St. Anne Convent on Route 8 in Melbourne, Kentucky. As you go to St. Anne, do not speed, you will get a ticket. Since there is no travel time, the times for the closings will be earlier. They will begin at 3:45 p.m.  Please be at St. Anne's by 3:15 p.m., come through the front doors of the Convent, we will direct you to our "hiding" place. Closing dates are February 22nd for the Men and March 8th for the Women. Hope to see you all there.

DeColores,

Dear Cursillo Community,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all and may the Birth of Jesus not only occur within our families, but also in our hearts as well.  May His love grow in each of us throughout this year as we continue to share that love with our friends.  We are very blessed this year to have such generosity bestowed on the Cursillo movement this year as donations continue to arrive.  There is so much we as a movement can do with these extra funds to help keep this ministry alive and well in our diocese.  It is such a joy to witness the many hearts on fire for the Lord.  As it says in Luke 12:49 “"I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!”  It is our job to kindle that fire in as many hearts as we can.

On January 17th there will be a DeColores Dinner Dance at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, there is a flyer on the website. The dance will sell out quickly, so please, if you want to attend, get your tickets now. The cost is $25 a couple and $12.50 for a single. Please contact any of the following people to reserve your spots as soon as possible:

Barb and Vic Boelscher at 586-8780
Carol and Mike Wells at 635-7394
Vickie and Jeff Jehn at 356– 0408
Renee and Dan Fagel at 344– 8838

Beginning in January, there will be a location change for the Campbell County Ultreya. The new host will be St. Bernard Parish in Dayton, on the third Wednesday at 7 PM., beginning January 21st. We hope that many of you will be able to attend. If you do not know where St. Bernard is, directions will be posted on the website.  Deacons Dave Klingenberg and Charlie Dietz will be the Ultreya coordinators for St. Bernard. I would like to thank Jean Cate for hosting the St. Thomas Ultreya for so many years.  Her service to the movement is invaluable.  Jean’s assistant has been Nancy Ruschman who has also served the movement tirelessly.  Thank you both for such commitment and dedication.  The second Ultreya will be held on the 4th Thursday of each month at St. Pius X in Edgewood.

St. Pius will host their Ultreya on Thursday January 29 at 7 PM in the cafeteria. There is a conflict with the normal night due to Confirmation. This one has been lead by the men’s prayer group that includes Ed Bosch, Tom Ruberg, Joe Green, Bill Geisen, Marshall Liberman, John Hinken, and Pat Raverty. Thank you for your gift to our community.   It will return to the 4th Thursday in February, 2009.

From now on, our weekends will be held at St. Anne Convent, Melbourne, Ky. The dates for the upcoming weekends are February 19-22, 2009 for the Men’s, led by Chris Dillon and March 5-8 for the Women’s, led by Barb Vogel. Both of these teams need our prayers for protection. There will be people needed to help in many areas, as the time draws nearer we will let you know how you can help. Look around, remember our 4th day tells us to evangelize our environments. Ask Jesus who He wants on these weekends, and then go be His hands, His feet, His eyes, and His heart to our world.

My Dear Friends in Christ,

The weekend we have just completed was an absolutely awesome experience for candidates and team members alike.  Our 24 new babe chicks are walking into their 4th day with the greatest gift of all – realizing how much they are loved by God and how worthy they are of that love!  This gift is one they will pass on to their environments as they share the techniques learned on the weekend to talk to Jesus about their friends and then talk to their friends about Jesus.

They are ready to dine at the abundant feast of the heavenly banquet and are no longer willing to settle for just cheese sandwiches. (Thanks for that Fr. Mike)

Last night, at the closing, I stood in front of the community somewhat unprepared.  I felt compelled to introduce the secretariat – but to my dismay – I neglected to mention two vital members.  Deacon Dave Klingenberg, the Spiritual Director of the Cursillo Movement for the Diocese of Covington, and Jeff Jehn, our Communications Coordinator, who provides the community with our mailings and e-mailings.  Our movement wouldn’t be complete without them.  Please accept my apologies – as you know, serving on a weekend leaves one sleep deprived and I will take the liberty and use this excuse.

The 2009 weekend dates have been set and they are as follows:

We ask that you pray fervently for all teams in formation. The teams come under regular attack from Satan (just ask recent team members), and they need the protection of our Father in Heaven. Chris Dillon has adopted the prayer to St. Michael for his team.  This would be an excellent way to remember all of the teams or any other prayers you would like to offer.

As you know by now, this closing was the final time we were able to celebrate a Sunday evening mass as a Cursillo Community.  Beginning with Advent, Bishop Foys has instituted a policy that no mass be celebrated outside of the normal parish schedule for a Sunday mass.  This is to encourage all parishioners to worship within their parish community.  Our Cursillistas will still celebrate a closing mass on Sunday with just the team & candidates, because they will be unable to participate in mass at their parish.  But for the larger community, from now on, all closings will consist of our babe chicks sharing what the weekend meant to them, a short prayer service and a reception – all at St. Anne’s Convent.  No luggage transportation and no candidate relocation – I look forward to the simplicity of the logistics and the ability to contain everything under one roof.

The generosity of the community has been overwhelming and I can’t help but send thanks once again.  As of last night (11/23/08) we have collected over $4,000 in our annual appeal, which will help defray the costs for the things we provide for our weekends (spiritual director accommodations, scholarships for those who wish to participate but can’t afford to, pilgrims guides, crosses, literature to pass out, mailings, etc.).  My heart can’t contain the gratitude I feel.  So many have reached out and offered to help in some way.  I am humbled at the outpouring of generosity in time, talent and treasure all being offered for the benefit of this movement.  It reassures me that Cursillo will live on in this diocese for a long time to come.  Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to assist at upcoming weekends at St. Anne’s in Melbourne.  We will need meal servers, dishwashers, palanca chapel visitors, 72 hour prayer warriors, snack food donations, help with the opening and closing receptions (there are other jobs too – I’m just naming a few) It takes many hands to pull off a single weekend, and we sure could use yours.  Remember, this is OUR CURSILLO MOVEMENT!

Dear Cursillo Community,

First of all, I would like to express a heartfelt thanks to all who have contacted me with a desire to serve.  I have tried to put all who did, to work for Christ within our movement in some way, shape or form.  Please continue to contact me because Christ is counting on US!  Whether you are aware or maybe not, we have begun to assist with meals again at our weekends.  This has brought much excitement back into the community – as it fuels our fire seeing the babe chicks as they progress in their journey during their weekends.  Working together with others in the community can only serve to strengthen it.

This is our annual appeal letter – sent early to beat the rush – with the hopes that you may consider making a donation to the Cursillo Movement this year as we continue to evangelize our environment throughout the diocese of Covington.  We try to be as frugal as possible with our spending and still provide what is needed for the candidates and community.

For every candidate as well as team member, we have subsidized a portion of the cost for the accommodations for the weekend.  We feel that is important to fully subsidize the cost for our spiritual directors as their time and resources are so precious to us.  We provide materials for each candidate that are not included in the weekend charge – such as crosses, Pilgrim’s Guides, Fourth Day materials and so forth.   We also offer scholarships for those who wish to make a weekend and can’t afford to do so.  We usually subsidize one or two candidates or team members per weekend.  In order to defray some of these costs, it was decided that beginning with the Spring 2009 weekends, we will be raising the rates to $160 per team member and candidate, but that increase will only cover their accommodations - not the extra resources.  This spring, we will be moving our weekends to St. Anne’s Convent in Melbourne, KY which is comparable in price to Marydale (only $3 more per person). St. Anne’s Convent is a larger facility and has more guest rooms, chapels and meeting rooms to utilize for our weekends with no need to transport candidates and team members for the closings to St. Pius X in Edgewood.  It will all be contained within the same venue. We feel that this change will enhance the experience for all involved – team and candidates.

We have a School of Leaders to educate our community more fully in the Cursillo Movement and provide books and materials to those interested in developing their leadership roles within this diocese.  We must also remain connected with our Regional and National Cursillo Movements as we are a part of a larger community and interact with Dioceses across the country.  Keeping you all informed of what is going on via mailings is also a cost paid for with donations.

I hope you can see that what we are doing is all for the greater glory of God and the evangelization of our environments, as individuals as well as the larger community.  Our candidates receive so much and it is due to your palanca of prayer and financial generosity.

Please consider making a donation to the movement. If you (or your prayer group) wish to sponsor a candidate or a spiritual director, specify that on your check, if you wish to pay for 4th day materials, let us know.  Know that Christ is counting on us – we are His Hands and Feet in today’s world.  We need you.

Decolores,

Carolyn Bosch

I am so inspired by all the hard work and dedication to the movement that has been happening around me. All I have had to do is ask, and one or more of you have stepped up to the plate and taken on a task. Many hands make light work and I am in awe of the willingness of so many of you to help revive this movement. Thank You, Danke Schoen, Dzieki, Gratia, Merci, Gracias, Asanteni, how many ways can I say thanks?

Change is coming – and change is good… I say this because we have a couple of changes that we need to inform you about. First, beginning with the Spring 2009 weekends, our new home will be St. Anne’s Convent in Melbourne, KY.

This change will be wonderful – it is only $2 more per person than Marydale, but offers us many more amenities –such as a library, many chapels, a reception room and much, much more. Secondly, as of the beginning of Advent 2008, we will no longer be allowed to host a closing mass for the larger community. A diocesan wide directive has asked that no additional masses be celebrated anywhere in the diocese outside a parish’s normal schedule to encourage parishioners to worship within their own community. Our candidates and team will still celebrate the Eucharist on Sunday with their smaller group as they will be sequestered on “retreat” unable to attend mass at their own parish, but later on Sunday afternoon, a closing prayer service and reception will be celebrated with the larger community invited.

One of the “perks” of being at St. Anne’s Convent is the convenience of not having to transport luggage and candidates to another location. We also will be allowed to assist at meals more fully and need many hands for “dishwashers”.

As of Spring, 2009, our prices will also increase to $160 per team member and candidates alike. This covers just the cost of accommodations (room & board). As you know, our candidates receive so much more than just room & board, but the movement (with your donations) will cover the cost of Pilgrim Guides, Crosses, 4th Day materials, etc… Please know your donations are necessary for these weekends to continue.

We want you to get involved in the community once again. If you need a social event to spark you into coming forward, we have a dinner dance scheduled for January 17th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Burlington, KY.

Save the date and join the fun. The cost will be minimal. Come and introduce yourself to me. I will put you to work if that is what you desire. If you have ideas to share, I am open to that as well. Our movement doesn’t work without you. The Secretariat is so excited to be a partner with the Holy Spirit in leading this movement in to the future with your help and support.

Our Women’s Weekend is quickly filling up for November 20-23rd, if you have talked to Christ about a particular friend, talk to that friend. Bring them to Christ. He is always counting on you! The Men’s spring weekend dates are February 19-22, 2009 and the Women’s spring weekend dates are March 5-8, 2009. Please offer palanca for these teams in formation – your prayers are appreciated – and as you know, they are the lever that raises the spirits of those on the teams to do Christ’s work in leading others to Him.

DeColores,

Carolyn Bosch
