The Three Day Cursillo

Organization

The Raleigh Catholic Diocese Cursillo Movement is comprised of English, Spanish and Vietnamese speaking community segments. As a US National Cursillo practice, all Vietnamese community segments are administered at the National level (see National Contacts at http://www.cursillo.org/affiliated.html). The Raleigh Diocesan Movement is led locally by a Secretariat which provides oversight and guidance to an Anglo School of Leaders and a Hispanic School of Leaders under By Laws adopted in November 2000. The Schools of Leaders (SoL) are responsible to accomplish the work of running the Movement in their respective community segments, and to work together to ensure that the Diocesan Movement operates as a unified Catholic Cursillo community. In addition to the ByLaws, the work of the Anglo SoL is accomplished in accordance with a set of Operating Practices that provide details on the work tasks of the Anglo SoL Sections, and are updated periodically to address changing community needs.

Directors

The Director of the Anglo SoL is Steve Levesque 919-518-2454 srlevesque@nc.rr.com, and the Anglo SoL 3-Days Section Chairperson is Tom Jones (919-570-9169 tmjmrj@nc.rr.com

Section Details

The 3-Days Section insures that every element of the Cursillo Weekend is directed to properly educating the Candidates who attend those Weekends. This includes, among other things, Team selection and training, scheduling facilities, overseeing facility logistics, facilitating comfort (proper nourishment and rest), and providing necessary supplies. It is also the responsibility of 3-Days to see that required books, publications and other supplies, which are needed by the Movement as determined by the School of Leaders, are always available.

** Spanish dates and locations should be confirmed with the Spanish Cursillo Leadership

Weekends are typically held at the Christian Family Living Center (CFLC) in North Topsail, NC and the Short Journey Center (SJC) in Smithfield. Directions to both are here.

One of the items we are missing at our weekends is Music with instruments. Jim Dougan would like to try and help build up a music ministry so that we have Cursillistas to keep us all in tune. He has offered to provide free Guitar lessons to Cursillistas who are willing to help out with music for Ultreyas or 3-day weekends. If you are interested please give me a call and I will be glad to get you in touch with Jim.

De Colores!

Cursillo is a movement, not an organization, and thus has no official song **[see just below]- but the folk song De Colores! (in a variety of forms) has been used as a gathering song on Weekends in many dioceses. Click Here to get the words in colorful, printable form!

Where did "De Colores" come from?

The phrase "De Colores" is the title of a popular folk song which begins with these words and which has become very popular among cursillistas. Some have attempted to give this expression the status of a ritual, a symbol, or even read into it an expression of the state of conscience: They say "De Colores" to signify that they are in the state of grace. This has been done, however, without foundation. It is simply a song which was popular during the early days of the Cursillo Movement and which provided simple, innocent and even naive words which are used - and continue to be used - as a means of relaxation and amusement during the free periods of the Cursillo. Neither the song itself nor the phrase "De Colores" (or any other symbol) should be allowed to become an "in-group" expression separating cursillistas from others.

Is there any preferred song?

There are no specially designated songs for the Cursillo or for any moment of it. The selection depends upon the different areas and the songs popular there, the lyrics of which are many times adaptable to the themes and climate of the Cursillo. From the very beginning, the song "De Colores" has held a special place, to such an extent that, although it was not planned, it has become the preferred song of the cursillistas the world over. It has been translated into Italian, English, Portuguese, German, French, Chinese and other languages.
